Research a PAC or committee
Committee spending profiles summarize available payment records. Their itemized totals may differ from complete source-reported receipts and expenditures, and a committee’s name alone does not establish its relationship to a candidate.
Find the committee and set the period
Section titled “Find the committee and set the period”- Open Committee & PAC spending (
/spending/pacs). - Search for the committee or PAC name. Choose a source and period, or use Custom dates when needed.
- In Rankings, compare committee names and sources. Select a committee name to open its profile.
- Confirm the profile’s identity and available official identifiers. Use Search all records (
/search) with a complete FEC ID when you need to distinguish similar names. - Select an Election cycle, or All available dates, and a source scope when those controls are available. Check these again after opening the profile; directory dates do not necessarily carry over.
A committee’s absence from spending rankings does not establish that it has no receipts, filings, or political activity.
Review spending and payees
Section titled “Review spending and payees”Open Overview to review reported disbursements, payment records, payees, and the most recent payment date. Read any partial-coverage notice before using a ranking or share of spending.
Open Payees to inspect where money went. Follow an available payee link to review the recipient record. Source-listed names remain distinct where BackerBase lacks sufficient identity evidence; do not combine similar vendor names without checking their records.
The payee sections distinguish several kinds of activity:
| Activity | What to check |
|---|---|
| Ordinary payments | Reported purpose, category, date, amount, and recipient identity. |
| Transfers to committees | The direction of the payment and the source’s transaction classification. A transfer does not establish organizational affiliation. |
| Direct candidate contributions | The source-supported candidate identity and transaction type. A contribution does not by itself establish an endorsement. |
| Independent expenditures | Whether separate coverage is available and whether the source reports support or opposition. Do not infer outside spending from ordinary payments. |
If independent-expenditure coverage is unavailable, do not read that state as zero spending or add an assumed amount to the committee’s payments.
Inspect payment evidence
Section titled “Inspect payment evidence”- Open Transactions.
- Compare the date, payee, purpose and memo, source status, and amount.
- Note any refund, amendment, or memo-only designation. Memo-only detail is excluded from profile totals; do not add it again as a separate payment.
- Select Source when available to open the supporting filing or image.
The current Transactions view displays up to 25 recent records. It is not the committee’s complete ledger, and the sum of the visible rows need not equal the profile total. Use the source filings for evidence beyond this selection.
An absent amendment label is not proof that a record was never amended. Check the originating filing when that distinction matters.
Review filings and funding
Section titled “Review filings and funding”Open Filings and use Sort filings to review recent activity or reported receipts. Check each filing’s jurisdiction, period, and status, then follow its source link.
Filing rows are supporting evidence. They can cover overlapping periods or amendments and should not be added together to recreate the profile total. Louisiana filing associations can rely on an exact reported name; confirm the filer in the original report.
Open Sources for available funding categories, official roles, coverage dates, and methodology. Loans, transfers, and contributions are different receipt categories. Missing funding detail does not establish that the committee raised no money.
Verify a finding
Section titled “Verify a finding”Before using a spending figure, retain the committee identity, source scope, period, and supporting report or transaction details. Distinguish a source’s reported total from a total calculated from available payment records.
Check Data status and methodology (/data-status) for source coverage and current gaps. If a source link is unavailable, use the report and committee identifiers to locate the record at the originating agency. Report a specific discrepancy through Feedback, with a public source link when possible.
